Ranking of the Best Granite Countertop Fabricators & Installers in Massachusetts 2026

1. Measure the Length and Width of Each Area:
   • The standard countertop depth along the wall is 24 inches.
   • For a kitchen island, the width can range from 27 to 36 inches, depending on your preferences.
2. Include Overhangs:
   • Allow for 1–1.5 inches of countertop overhang beyond the cabinets to provide comfortable standing space at work surfaces.
3. Account for Cutouts and Openings:
   • Factor in dimensions for sinks, cooktops, and appliances. If you have precise specifications for your fixtures, include these in your measurements.
4. Calculate Area and Material Needed:
   • Determine the total area of the countertop by multiplying the length by the width for each section. Add the areas of all sections to get the total in square feet.

Yes, sealing is required for granite countertops to protect them from stains and moisture. On average, the installation process takes 4 to 8 hours, depending on several factors:

• Complexity of the Design Simple, straight-line countertops are quicker to install, while more complex designs with multiple sections or angles require more time.
• Number of Cutouts Cutouts for sinks, cooktops, and other built-in elements increase installation time as they demand precise fitting.
• Preparation of the Base If the cabinets need leveling or reinforcement, this can add 1–2 hours to the process.
• Sealing Once the countertop is installed, sealing is necessary to improve durability and resist stains. This step usually takes an additional 30–60 minutes.

Price per square foot: Price per square foot is $40–$75 for standard granite types. The cost for an average-sized kitchen (30 sq. ft.) is about $3,500 with installation, but rare and visible granite will cost up to $500 per square foot. Additional Costs:

• Installation and Labor Costs: Approximately 22% of the material cost.
• Cutouts for Sink and Cooktop, Edge Treatments — billed separately.

Yes, you can do this on your own. However, keep in mind that professional help has never hurt anyone. We recommend checking our ranking, where we’ve selected only the best professionals for countertop manufacturing, installation, and removal. Here are the steps for removing a glued granite countertop:

1. Disconnect All Utilities Turn off water, electricity, and gas if the countertop is connected to the sink, stove, or other utilities.
2. Loosen the Sealant Around the Edges Use a sharp knife or blade to cut along the joint between the countertop and the wall/cabinets, cutting through the sealant. This will make it easier to detach the countertop.
3. Separate the Countertop from the Adhesive Use a mounting spatula or pry bar to carefully lift the countertop from the bottom and loosen the adhesive connections. Work gradually along the length to avoid chips or cracks.
4. Use Adhesive Remover (If Needed) In tough cases, the adhesive may be especially strong. In such situations, it’s safe to use a stone-safe adhesive remover to weaken the bond.

It’s important to note that the thickness of a granite countertop can vary based on the individual project. Below are the standard and most popular thicknesses:

• 3/4 inch is a thinner option. It is used with additional support or a beveled edge to give the appearance of a thicker countertop. This thickness is often used in more decorative projects but can also work for kitchens that require a lighter, more elegant look.
• 1 1/4 inch (one and one-quarter inch). This is the most popular thickness for kitchen countertops, as it provides an optimal combination of strength and visual mass. It is more resistant to damage and doesn’t require additional reinforcement.
• 2 inches. This thickness is rare but is used to create design accents or unique projects, especially for islands.

There are several ways to address this issue. Below, we outline the most effective methods. 1. Epoxy Resin with Color Pigment

• How to Use: Clean the crack thoroughly using isopropyl alcohol or a mild solvent to remove dirt and debris that could interfere with adhesion.
• Preparation: Mix epoxy resin with a color pigment that matches the marble. The pigment ensures the mixture blends perfectly with the countertop's shade.
• Application: Use a toothpick or a fine spatula to carefully apply the mixture into the crack, filling it completely. For deeper cracks, apply the resin in layers.
• Finishing Touch: Once cured (typically within 24 hours), gently sand the area with fine-grit sandpaper or a polishing pad to make it level with the rest of the surface. Finally, polish the area to restore its shine.

• How to Use: Clean the crack as you would for epoxy. Acrylic stone adhesive is ideal for narrow cracks due to its strong adhesion properties.
• Application: Apply the adhesive into the crack with a spatula for precise filling.
• Sanding and Polishing: Once cured (usually 1–2 hours), sand and polish the area to blend the repair seamlessly. Use ultra-fine sandpaper (1000–1200 grit) for a smooth finish.

• How to Use: Ensure the crack is clean and completely dry. Choose a colored filler that closely matches the marble’s pattern.
• Application: Apply the filler with a spatula, pressing it into the crack. For a natural look, mix several shades to mimic the marble’s veining.
• Finishing Touch: Once dry, lightly sand and polish the area to achieve a smooth, glossy finish.

• When to Use: Best for masking minor scratches and shallow cracks. While polishing paste won’t fill cracks, it can reduce their visibility.
• Process: Apply the paste to a soft cloth and polish the damaged area using circular motions until the desired shine is achieved.
• Finishing Touch: For optimal results, use the paste with a polishing machine or pad.

• How to Use: Clean the crack and, if needed, choose wax in a matching color. Wax filler is particularly effective for minor cracks and chips.
• Application: Warm the wax to soften it, then apply it into the crack. Smooth the surface with a spatula and allow the wax to harden.

To maintain a granite countertop’s durability and natural beauty, follow these essential care tips: 1. Daily Cleaning

• Wipe the countertop with a soft cloth or sponge using warm water and a drop of mild soap or a specialized neutral stone cleaner.
• Avoid abrasive cleaners and rough sponges that could scratch the surface.

• Use a mild soapy solution for most stains. For stubborn stains (like oil or wine), create a paste with baking soda and water, apply it to the stain, cover it with plastic wrap, and leave it overnight. Gently wipe it off the next day.
• Avoid acidic cleaners, such as vinegar or lemon juice, as they can damage the surface.

• Granite is heat-resistant but can suffer damage from sudden temperature changes. Use trivets or hot pads under hot pans and pots to protect the sealant and maintain its appearance.

• Granite countertops typically require sealing every 1–2 years to prevent liquid absorption and staining.
• To check if resealing is needed, drop a small amount of water on the surface. If the water absorbs and leaves dark spots, it’s time to reseal.

• Do not use bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, or other aggressive chemicals, as they can degrade the sealant and leave streaks.

• While granite is scratch-resistant, always use cutting boards for chopping. This protects the surface and helps maintain the sealant’s longevity.

Granite countertops generally weigh between 13 to 20 pounds per square foot (approximately 63–97 kg per square meter), depending on thickness. Here's a breakdown by standard thickness:

• 3/4 inch (approximately 2 cm): Weighs about 13–15 pounds per square foot (approximately 63–73 kg per square meter).
• 1 1/4 inch (approximately 3 cm): Weighs about 18–20 pounds per square foot (approximately 88–97 kg per square meter).

• 2 cm thickness: Weighs around 130–150 pounds (59–68 kg).
• 3 cm thickness: Weighs around 180–200 pounds (88–97 kg).

It is possible to change the color of a granite countertop using several methods. However, granite is a durable and dense material, so any modifications should be done carefully to avoid damage. Here are the main approaches: 1. Using Tinted Stone Sealer Description: Tinted sealers add a slight color layer to the surface while maintaining the natural look of the stone. How to Apply: Clean and dry the countertop, then evenly apply the tinted sealer with a brush or roller. Let it dry and apply a second layer if needed. Result: A subtle color change or darkening effect that enhances the depth and vibrancy of the granite. 2. Staining with Stone Dyes Description: Stone dyes penetrate granite pores to alter its color. These are professional-grade and come in various shades. How to Apply: Thoroughly clean the countertop, then apply the dye using a sponge or soft cloth, rubbing it into the surface. Allow it to dry completely and seal the countertop to lock in the color. Result: A more noticeable color change while preserving the granite's original texture and veining. This method requires skill and is often performed by professionals. 3. Painting with Epoxy Paint Description: Epoxy paint can be used to create a solid color, completely covering the natural texture of the granite. How to Apply: Sand the countertop to remove the top sealer layer, then apply the epoxy paint in several thin coats, allowing each to dry. Finish with a clear protective layer. Result: A completely new, solid color surface without the natural granite texture. This is a drastic approach that conceals the stone's original appearance. 4. Using Decorative Films or Overlays Description: Vinyl films and decorative overlays temporarily change the countertop's color and appearance without damaging the stone. How to Apply: Clean the countertop and carefully apply the film, smoothing out bubbles. The film can be removed at any time if you want a different look. Result: A quick and temporary way to refresh the appearance with minimal cost. However, films are less durable than other methods.
