How Air Purifiers Work: HEPA, Carbon, and CADR
HEPA handles things like dust, pollen, pet dander, and wildfire particles. The HEPA rating tells you how well it catches particles, while CADR tells you how fast the purifier can clean the room.
HEPA traps particles, but it won’t remove gases or smells. Activated carbon can help with some odors and VOCs, but only if there is enough carbon to actually absorb them. A thin carbon sheet will do much less than a real carbon filter, and it still won’t handle things like carbon monoxide or radon.
CADR tells you how fast the purifier can clean the air, so higher is better, especially for wildfire smoke. For an 8-foot ceiling, aim for a smoke CADR around two-thirds of the room’s square footage.
Types of Air Purifiers
HEPA is for particles like dust, pollen, smoke, and pet dander. Activated carbon is for some odors and gases. Using both gives you broader coverage. Your HVAC filter can also help clean air throughout the house, but the system has to be able to handle the filter you choose.
Things like ionizers and other reactive technologies are a different story. They can help with specific problems, but some may produce byproducts and need regular maintenance, so you need to know what you’re actually trying to remove from the air before choosing one.

Jerry in Lake Stevens gave us a pretty normal example of why “cleaner air” has to start with the actual problem. His family had no AC, so on hot nights the choice was basically a stuffy bedroom or an open window full of pollen. Seasonal allergies made that tradeoff miserable.
An air purifier could help catch pollen that gets into the room, but it would still be fighting new pollen every time the window stayed open. Jerry’s project ended up solving the comfort problem too, so he did not have to use an open window as his summer cooling system.
What Can’t an Air Purifier Do?
This is where people spend money expecting the purifier to do a job it was never built to do:
- A purifier can reduce what is floating through the air, but it cannot remove the moisture problem, smoke source, or other conditions creating the pollution.
- One portable unit will not clean your whole home. It cleans the air in the room it sits in, full stop.
- For asthma and allergies, cleaner air helps reduce triggers, but it is one part of managing the condition, not a replacement for medical care.
- It cannot correct an HVAC filtration, moisture, or equipment problem. A portable purifier supplements, but does not replace, a correctly fitted HVAC filter, proper airflow, source control, or repair of contaminated system components. Ordinary dust inside ductwork does not by itself prove that duct cleaning is needed.
I care about filtration personally because I deal with seasonal allergies myself. So I understand the temptation to keep adding filters until the air feels perfect. But I still would not start by selling you another machine. I’d look at the actual problem you are trying to solve. Once you know that, it gets pretty obvious whether another purifier would actually add anything.
Seattle Case: When Whole-Home Filtration Made More Sense
Jason’s home in Wedgwood is a good example of why I don’t start with “buy an air purifier.” His son has seasonal allergies, and wildfire smoke bothers the family every summer. They were already replacing their heating and cooling system, so we could think about air purification as part of the HVAC design instead of trying to fix the problem later with a box in every room. As part of the project, we installed a 5-inch CAP G150 filter cabinet alongside the new Trane furnace and Mitsubishi system. I’m not showing you Jason’s house because I think you need the same setup. His air-quality problem affected the whole home, and we were already replacing the HVAC system. A problem limited to one bedroom during allergy season may be perfectly suited to a portable HEPA purifier. A whole-house smoke or allergy problem changes the math because forced-air HVAC may already be moving air through every room. At that point I want to know how much filtration the central system can handle before we start lining the house with portable boxes.
A Tech Brother Lesson From the Field
Jason never called us asking for the biggest air filter we could fit. He told Eli that wildfire smoke bothered the family and his son struggled with seasonal allergies. Since we were already replacing the HVAC system, a deeper whole-home filter made sense for his house. In another home, I might tell you to buy a good portable HEPA unit for the bedroom and leave the HVAC alone. Start with what you’re trying to get out of the air, not with the equipment somebody wants to sell you.

Q: Is it safe to sleep with an air purifier on all night?
A: Yes, a properly maintained mechanical air purifier is generally safe to run overnight. In fact, longer runtime means more air passes through the filter, so continuous operation usually provides better particle removal than running the unit for only an hour or two. Mechanical filtration such as HEPA is the straightforward option for overnight use. Ozone-generating equipment is a different story because ozone itself can irritate the lungs. Fan speed is mostly a tradeoff between noise and how quickly the purifier cleans the room. Blocked intakes or outlets slow that cleaning down.
Q: What are the signs that you may need an air purifier?
A: I’d want an actual airborne problem before I spent money on a purifier. Wildfire smoke is an obvious one. Allergens hanging around a bedroom can be another. If you already have good air and no specific particle problem, I’m not going to invent a reason for you to buy another machine.
A purifier makes less sense when the real problem is still producing pollution. Active mold still has a moisture source behind it. Cooking smoke is much easier to deal with when some of it leaves the house instead of asking a filter to catch everything afterward.
Q: Are there any downsides to using an air purifier?
A: The tradeoffs are pretty ordinary: the fan makes noise, the machine uses electricity, and the filters keep costing money after you buy it. Coverage matters too because a portable air cleaner normally handles one room or connected area, not the whole house.
Air purifiers also have limits. A particle filter will not remove most gases or odors, while a thin carbon sheet may become saturated quickly. Dirty filters reduce airflow and performance. Some electronic air cleaners can also generate ozone. Anything marketed around ozone or “activated oxygen” gets a much harder look from me because now the cleaner itself may be adding something you don’t want to breathe.
Q: Do air purifiers really improve indoor air quality, and are they worth it?
A: Yes, air purifiers really work when the unit is matched to the room and the pollutant you are trying to remove. The benefit depends on the purifier’s Clean Air Delivery Rate, fan speed, placement, filter condition, and daily runtime.
Q: What is the 2/3 rule for air purifiers?
A: The 2/3 rule helps match the purifier’s smoke CADR to the room size. The smoke CADR should be at least two-thirds of the room’s floor area in square feet.
For example:
- A 120-square-foot room needs a smoke CADR of at least 80
- A 200-square-foot room needs a smoke CADR of at least 133
- A 300-square-foot room needs a smoke CADR of at least 200
Wildfire smoke changes the usual calculation. AHAM uses a smoke CADR approximately equal to the room area, so a 200-square-foot room lands around a smoke CADR of 200. These calculations assume an 8-foot ceiling. Higher ceilings and open floor plans give the purifier more air to clean, so the same CADR effectively covers less space.
Q: How do air purifiers work, and what do they do?
A: Most portable air purifiers use a fan to pull room air through one or more filters. A prefilter captures hair and larger dust. A HEPA air filter captures fine airborne particles. Activated carbon may adsorb some gases and odor-causing compounds. A true HEPA filter is rated to capture at least 99.97% of particles measuring 0.3 microns under test conditions. However, the HEPA rating describes the filter material, not how quickly the complete machine cleans a room. CADR tells you how much particle-cleaning work the complete machine can actually do. That makes CADR one of the most useful numbers for comparing air cleaning performance.
Q: What contaminants can an air purifier remove?
A: A HEPA purifier can reduce airborne dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, smoke particles, PM2.5, and some bacteria-containing or virus-containing aerosols in the air in your home. It cannot remove particles that have already settled on bedding, carpets, furniture, or other surfaces unless those particles become airborne again. Odors, volatile organic compounds, and other gases require activated carbon or another gas-specific adsorbent. The filter needs a substantial amount of carbon to remain effective. Standard air purifiers do not remove carbon dioxide, control humidity, eliminate radon, or repair the moisture problem causing mold.
Q: What health benefits can an air purifier provide?
A: Reducing airborne particles may lower exposure to smoke, fine particulate matter, pollen, mold spores, and pet allergens. Some users may experience less eye or throat irritation, fewer allergy symptoms, or better asthma control. The improvement is not guaranteed, and an air purifier is not a medical treatment. It works best when combined with cleaning, moisture control, smoke avoidance, ventilation, and any treatment prescribed by a healthcare professional. EPA reviews have found that health improvements from portable HEPA filtration are generally small and do not occur for every person or every symptom.
Q: What should you look for when choosing an air purifier?
A: I care a lot more about measurable performance than whatever is printed in giant letters on the front of the box. Smoke CADR tells me how much room the machine can realistically handle. HEPA tells me what kind of particle filter is inside.
Carbon matters when odors or gases are part of the problem. Seeing the word “carbon” on the package tells me very little unless there is enough of it to actually do some work. Noise matters too because the purifier has to keep running to clean anything. Replacement filters are part of the real price once you own the machine.
AHAM Verifide gives you independently tested CADR numbers. ENERGY STAR tells you about energy use. CARB certification helps with the ozone side of the equation. They answer different questions, so one sticker by itself doesn’t tell me the whole machine is good.
Q: Where should you place an air purifier for the best results?
A: Placement is mostly an airflow problem. The purifier needs room to pull dirty air in and push filtered air back out. Bury it behind a couch and you’re making both jobs harder.
Bedrooms are a common place for one because you spend hours there at a time. Wildfire smoke changes another variable because an open window keeps feeding new particles into the room. A purifier sized for one closed room also has a much harder job once it is trying to clean half the house.
