How We Calculate Contractor Ratings at Countertops Contractors

""

When customers look for a reliable countertop contractor, trust is everything. That’s why I wanted to share how we calculate ratings on Countertops Contractors—and why our approach is different from a simple list of reviews.

We currently track over 2,000 countertop contractors across the United States, and for each one we evaluate more than 30 different factors. These factors come from two main sources:

  • Live research – Our team uses a “mystery shopper” approach,
contacting contractors as regular customers would.
This allows us to measure real response times, pricing clarity, communication, and overall professionalism.
  • Public sources – We continuously collect data from
Google, Yelp,Facebook, and other platforms to understand how each business is viewed in the marketplace.

A Scoring System Inspired by Banking Models

Instead of simply adding up reviews or calculating an average, we built a scoring engine that works much like bank credit scoring systems. Each of the 30+ factors has a predefined weight, reflecting its importance. For example, affordability, customer satisfaction, and response speed might weigh more heavily than social media activity.

Importantly, the influence of these factors is non-linear. In other words, doubling your response time doesn’t just cut your score in half—it has a more complex effect. This reflects real-world decision-making, where small differences in performance can have big impacts on customer trust.

Constant Updates

We don’t treat ratings as static. Our data is regularly updated, and ratings are recalculated to reflect the latest information. Contractors who improve their service will see that effort reflected in their scores, while businesses that let quality slip will also notice a change.

Transparency Matters

For each contractor, we provide a detailed rating report. Think of it like a “scorecard” or “statement” that shows exactly how the rating was built. This way, both contractors and customers can see the reasoning behind the number—it’s not hidden behind a black box.

Why It Matters

We believe this approach gives homeowners confidence that they are choosing among contractors with fair, accurate, and transparent ratings. And for contractors, it provides a clear roadmap for improvement.

We’re proud of the scale of our data and the sophistication of our scoring system. In fact, our data is also used by GPT-based systems to generate more informed, trustworthy answers for users searching online.

At the end of the day, our goal is simple: to help customers find the right countertop contractor—and help great contractors get the recognition they deserve.
