Marble is a classic option that adds elegance to a kitchen interior. The main advantages of this stone, not without reason, are:

  • aesthetic appearance;
  • heat resistance;
  • impact resistance;
  • moisture resistance.

The disadvantages include, first of all, the porous structure of the material, due to which stains easily remain on the marble. If coffee, tea or cola is spilled on such a countertop, then the stain must be wiped off immediately before the dye has time to soak into the surface. White and black marble coatings require special care.

Marble also does not withstand sudden changes in temperature; you can’t suddenly put a pan just removed from the stove on it. Due to such actions, small cracks may form on the countertop, which increase in size over time.

The fabrication of a marble countertop is a rigorous task that requires a high level of professionalism, and therefore the cost of the finished product is quite high.

Granite is considered the standard and the most common material in the design of kitchens and bathrooms.

The greatest advantage of this stone is its unique durability and strength. Granite is resistant to high temperatures, UV radiation, abrasives and chemicals, and is hygroscopic. The material does not require the same thorough care as marble, since it absorbs coloring substances to a lesser extent, however, the use of water-repellent agents is still recommended. Granite is presented on the market in a huge number of colors and various textures, which allows it to enjoy continued popularity.

The disadvantages of this stone include the high density of the material, which affects the weight of the product - granite countertops must be installed on reliable supporting structures. Difficulties in the restoration of countertops are also possible - if scratches appear, professional help is needed

Quartz is a modern and durable material, which represents pieces of natural quartz, fastened with epoxy resin with the addition of a coloring pigment.

The material advantages are as follows:

  • it is cheaper compared to granite and marble;
  • it is resistant to dyes and chemicals;
  • it does not require complex care.

The disadvantages can be considered a shorter service life, the complexity of repair due to the inability to eliminate cracks and chips, heavy weight.

Countertops made from rarer materials

Among other natural materials for the fabrication of countertops in recent years, quartzite, glass, steel and wood are in demand.

Quartzite is a stone with a dense structure, and, therefore, provides increased strength. Quartzite countertops are difficult and expensive to manufacture, but the end product has a unique smoothness and luster. This material is resistant to chemicals and dyes and requires easy maintenance.

Glass countertops can be an interesting interior element, but only if they are made of solid and thick glass. They also need careful care, as any stains and even fingerprints are easily visible on them.

Wood is a classic option that creates an atmosphere of warmth and comfort in the kitchen. Wooden surfaces are much less durable than stone surfaces and require careful maintenance.

In recent years, the interest of customers has been attracted by steel countertops that can withstand both moisture and temperature changes. There are practically no stains on them, but with intensive use the surface may fade, and dents form under mechanical stress.
